As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gathers momentum across Canada, the United States and Mexico, CRRC’s rail transit solutions are supporting sustainable and efficient mobility in Mexico’s major host cities.

  In Mexico City, football fans can travel directly to the Mexico City Stadium, the venue for the opening match, via Light Rail Line 1. The light rail trains operating on this route were independently developed by CRRC and officially entered service in May this year. Designed to meet the operational needs of the World Cup as well as local urban transport conditions, the trains are helping the city manage increased passenger flows during the tournament while also serving everyday public transport needs.

  The trains feature a highly localized design. Their exterior livery incorporates the axolotl, an iconic species native to Mexico, while the front-end design draws inspiration from local landmarks such as the Angel of Independence and the Monument to the Revolution. These design elements reflect CRRC’s attention to local culture and its effort to integrate rail transit products into the urban identity of host cities.

  In terms of operational performance, the trains are designed for flexible coupled operation, with two to six cars able to be configured according to passenger demand. Each train can carry up to 1,752 passengers, helping provide additional transport capacity during major events and periods of peak travel.

  The trains are also adapted to Mexico City’s high-altitude operating environment. At an average elevation of around 2,240 meters, Mexico City presents challenges such as thinner air and lower air pressure. CRRC’s vehicles are equipped with regenerative braking and low-noise ventilation systems, and use durable materials to support long-term performance, passenger comfort and operational reliability in local conditions.

  To date, 115 trains independently developed by CRRC have been put into operation in Mexico, covering the three major World Cup host cities of Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. These vehicles are supporting both event-related transport and daily mobility for local communities.
